The petrol range starts with a 109bhp 1.6, but you’ll probably prefer one of the two turbocharged petrols, a smooth and punchy 1.4 with 128bhp, or a 2.0 with 178bhp. There’s also a 138bhp 2.0 that’s only available with a CVT transmission. The diesel line-up includes 85- and 105bhp 1.5-litre units, or there's a 1.9 with 128bhp. There’s also a 2.0 diesel that has 158bhp with a manual 'box, and 148bhp with an automatic.

The Coupe has stiffer, lower suspension settings for sharper handling and, as a result, it's not as forgiving over bumps as the five-door, which is generally comfortable.

The Megane is a reasonably quiet way to travel. The engines are particularly impressive, being very smooth and quiet.
